Illinois Leads Midwest in Clean Energy Job Growth |
State's Commitment to Renewable Energy Fuels Economic Expansion |
Illinois has emerged as a leader in the Midwest's clean energy sector, adding over 5,100 new jobs in 2024 and bringing the state's total to nearly 129,000 clean energy positions.
This growth, reported by the annual Clean Jobs Midwest study, underscores Illinois' dedication to renewable energy and its economic benefits.
Energy efficiency remains the dominant employer within the state's clean energy industry, accounting for over 86,700 jobs.
Renewable energy sectors, including solar and wind, contribute approximately 19,254 positions, while the clean vehicle industry employs nearly 15,900 workers.
The Chicago metropolitan area stands out, hosting more than 85,300 clean energy workers, ranking it fifth nationally among metro regions.
Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the state's achievements, noting that Illinois doubled private investments in clean energy from $2 billion in 2023 to $4 billion in 2024.
He emphasized that these investments are driving job creation and positioning Illinois as a global economic powerhouse.
Despite this progress, challenges remain.
Federal policy shifts have introduced uncertainties, with recent reports indicating potential job losses due to changes in support for renewable energy initiatives.
To sustain momentum, state leaders are advocating for legislation like the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB25), aiming to add 6 GW of battery storage and enhance energy efficiency programs.
As Illinois continues its transition toward a 100% clean energy future, the state's proactive policies and investments are not only fostering job growth but also contributing to a more sustainable and resilient economy. |
